Lots of questions here, and to all of them, I think the answer is that there is not one answer. The correct way is to have a system that works and stick to it. Instead, when I need the space on my main drive, I redirect Lightroom to the external drive then delete the folder on my main drive. I don't do it this way, because my backup procedure does the copy for me. For example, most sites will say that to move folder, it's best to do it in Lightroom. Mine is not exactly typical, but it works for me. I don't format my cards until I need the space. Mine is arranged by month, and LR takes care of creating the new month folder for me. One benefit of doing it this way is that Lightroom can target a folder hierarchy that you specify. I use Lightroom to copy from the flash card to hard drive. I recently bought a 1TB Sandisk USB SSD that I can use for files I need faster access that I can get with the hard drives. Then I use Amazon photos (free with a prime membership) to backup from one of those drives. From there I use an rsync command in terminal to synchronize to two different hard drives. My procedure is to download from camera card to main drive after each shoot. Whatever you decide, you need to have a backup. There are so many drives now, I don't think there is a best one. Naturally, they they were located in the folder where the downloaded photos from Adobe cloud replaced. It's found over 23,000 duplicates and it gave me a list of what each one was located. I forget the name, but it's very highly rated. So I download it my photos from Adobe cloud to my hard drive on my MacBook Pro.
